  • History

After years of practicing yoga and wondering why such an inspiring exercise was accompanied by such a dull and uninspiring array of mats, we committed to explore a method for producing genuinely customized, “one-off” yoga mats. We believe that one’s 12 square feet of floor space for their yoga, pilates, strength training, or stretching routine should truly reflect one’s individual spirit and interests. After 18 months of research and development in Europe, Asia, and the U.S. we arrived at a formula that finally enables people the freedom to express themselves, whether that be in the creation of their own mat, or in the adoption of YM’s unique artwork found in the Image Galleries.

The YM Galleries are expanding by the day and contain a collection of original work not seen anywhere else—most of which is only available as Limited Editions. We produce designs in-house with the YM team, as well as approach global artists young and old to share their own creations. Subscribe to our eNewsletter to be sure you don't miss out on the most collectable. Your “soul mat” is sure to be found here.

    YM Community

As Yogamatic.com grows in recognition, so does the YM Community. YM communicates with an ongoing network of established artists and talented, unknown artists who inspire our many exercise practitioners. When artists join the YM Community an alternative exhibition is created on our site showcasing their most recent work. Yogamatic.com donates part of the proceeds of each design sold to the artist’s charity of choice. The YM Galleries contain images created in the widest array of mediums—from highly designed graphical work to inventive photography to free-spirited fine art. Our Gallery Editor strives to maintain a high caliber of work from a spectrum of contributors. If you would like to submit a design for consideration we would welcome the opportunity for you to join in the movement.

Our TRAVEL MAT is also completely unique to Yogamatic.com. The mat measures 72 x 24 (180cm x 60cm) with the thickness of a regular towel. The recycled Natural Rubber reverse is embossed with a high traction grip, while the topside is made from white Polyester Micro-fibre. The mat only weighs 1.5lbs and is a very handy travel companion packing down to only 9 x 5 x 1. The mat also makes a great topper to your existing mat or a borrowed mat. This mat is well suited to HOT YOGA and works very well in combination with our regular yoga mat.

    Printing

Every product is printed on demand, individually to your order in our California studio, using ultra high-resolution state-of-the-art printing systems. The Yoga Mat uses flexible Dri-Touch inks that are water based and solvent free, resulting in an odor free and non-toxic finish. Meanwhile the dyes used on the Travel Mat are approved fabric pigments.

    Care Guide

Your YOGA MAT should be cleaned carefully by hand using warm water and a soft cloth. We encourage your mat to be stored in the YM Shoulder Bag supplied, rolled image side out. This will ensure that the mat stays crease-free and the image integrity is not compromised. DO NOT use cleaning solvents OR machine-wash.

Your TRAVEL MAT should be carefully hand-washed in warm water, but avoid scrubbing or wringing the product. Do not tumble dry, allow to drip-dry. Store folded in the YM Pouch supplied.

The mats are designed for the practice of yoga, pilates and similar low impact exercise. Rather like most sporting equipment, the images will eventually fade with use. We do not recommend wearing shoes as this type of abrasion will prematurely distress the image.

How to Choose Yoga Mats

When you first start out with yoga practice, you may use the yoga mat provided by your instructor or by your yoga class. However, as you advance in yoga practice, you may want to take the next step and purchase your very own yoga mats. Buying a yoga mat shows that you are committed to practicing yoga. Buying a customized mat allows you to make a real commitment to yoga while also expressing a personal sense of style. If you're in the market for yoga mats, here are some tips that will help you find the right yoga mats for you:

1) Consider the type of yoga that you are practicing. If you are practicing a low impact and not very challenging form of yoga, thin mats may be adequate. If you are practicing Ashtanga or other changing forms of yoga, you may wish to purchase a cotton yoga mat or a thicker sticky mat, both of which will help support you a little more.

2) Consider the size. Trying to fit onto a mat that is too small during yoga practice distracts you and prevents you from practicing yoga correctly. If you are cramped or you have to adjust your body or your mat during an exercise, you will do not get the full effect and the full benefits of yoga. Make sure that you get a yoga mat that is long enough to hold your entire body, or a visit a retailer who will create a customized yoga mat for your body shape and size. If you are practicing yoga with kids, colorful customized yoga mats in kid sizes are available as well.

3) Consider the style. You'll spend many hours with your yoga mats, so it makes sense to get something that you will enjoy spending time with. This is one reason why customized yoga mats are so popular. With customizes yoga mats, you can select just the type of style, design, and colors that will make you happiest.

4) Consider quality. Although you can get yoga mats for just a few dollars, yoga mats should be sturdy and easy to clean, so they don't fade, tear, and get ruined immediately. You can buy a good one that will last for not very much money.

5) Consider comfort. Comfort is perhaps the most important thing to consider when selecting yoga mats. If you feel more comfortable with a thicker mat or with cotton mats, then try out these types of mats and purchase one for yourself. The idea is that the more comfortable you are, the more you look forward to yoga practice and the more you will enjoy practice as well.

Understanding Yoga Mats

Yoga mats are very important in yoga practice. Designed for both seasoned yoga practitioners and beginner, mats offer a light-weight yet dense cushioning. The texture of yoga mats is also designed to keep feet and hands in position, so that you can maintain positions more easily, with less sliding around. If you are just starting out, good yoga mats will make practice easier. If you are advanced, good yoga mats will allow you to tackle more challenging positions and postures with ease.

Whether you are using yoga mats for yoga or mediation, mats provide great cushioning and support for you. They stand between you and that cold hard floor. Without good yoga mats, you may find that joints such as the hips, elbows and knees start to hurt. If you have back problems, trying yoga or meditation without a good yoga mat can even make your ailment worse. With good yoga mats, your whole body is correctly supported, and this means fewer aches and pains. With yoga mats, you can practice longer and return to practice more frequently with less pain, which lets you master your positions more quickly. The proper support that good yoga mats offer can also ensure fewer injuries, so that you practice does not need to be interrupted.

Of course, custom yoga mats are also just fun. You can choose to have your custom yoga mats imprinted with any pattern or color you wish, so that you infuse your practice with any images you choose. This can help ensure that you continue to practice yoga – having a mat you look forward to using can make practice more fun. If you use your yoga mats for meditation, custom yoga mats can provide you with an image or color to focus on during your sessions.

When considering custom yoga mats you will need to choose between thicker yoga mats and traditional sticky mats. Your choice may depend on how much padding you need. You may also want to use a padded mat for a softer base and use a sticky mat or cotton practice rug on top. This rug or mat will provide you with more grip and stability and can even help absorb moisture and sweat during those long and intense practice sessions.

If you are considering yoga without a proper yoga mat, please reconsider. Without good yoga mats, you can slip and injure yourself, especially once you try out more challenging postures. Yoga mats can help decrease the likelihood of injury by providing traction and padding. Custom yoga mats, especially, can also be an important way for you to signal to yourself that you intend to stick with it and take yoga seriously.

Keep Your Custom Yoga Mats Beautiful

New custom yoga mats are beautiful – imprinted with your favorite colors and designs, they are a true testament to your style and taste. However, if you want your custom yoga mats looking great through repeated practice, you will need to care for your mats so that they last for years to come.

The first clue as to how to care for your mats is the instructions or tag that came with your mat. Some special custom mats – including cloth mats – come with special care instructions that you should follow to the letter. Depending on how often you use your mats, you will want to clean your yoga mats at least once every other week or once a week. You might want to have more than one or two custom yoga mats so that each mat can dry out completely before you use it. Having a few custom yoga mats also allows you to switch up the colors and designs to suit your mood and allows you to ensure that the mats wear out only very gradually.

There are many gentle solutions you can use for cleaning a mat. Some people mix up mild soap with warm water. Others use a few drops of dish soap in warm water. Others use a little bit of vinegar in water. The general consensus, however, is to use gentle solutions and soaps, preferably diluted. Avoid hot water and icy water, which can damage delicate fabric on your mat. Apply a small amount of your chosen solution to your yoga mat and rub gently with a clean, dry towel.

You should never place yoga mats in the washer or dryer unless your mats are clearly labeled as machine washable. If your yoga mats get really dirty, soak them in warm water and a bit of gentle detergent. However, make sure that you rinse and dry out yoga mats completely. Wet yoga mats can be very slippery and dangerous.

Some stores sell yoga mat cleaning wipes. These are handy when you travel with your mat and come in many pleasant scents. They are not absolutely necessary for cleaning yoga mats – the above cleaning tips should work well – but they do make the cleaning process easy.

How you store your mat can also affect how long your mat lasts and how clean it is. Always store your mat covered, so that nothing can spill on it. Keep your mat in a cool, dry place as well. Heat can damage your mat and excessive moisture can cause mold to grow. Sunlight exposure can fade yoga mats. Always wait until your mat is completely dry before putting it away and your mat should last a long, long time.

Making Your Yoga Mats Last

If you have invested the money to buy a quality yoga mount or have paid for personalized yoga mats, of course you want to ensure that you have your mats for as long as possible. The good news is that with good care and proper storage, even yoga mats that are used frequently will last between one and two years. Here is how you can ensure that your mat lasts as long as possible:

1) Get more than one. Consider buying more than one personalized yoga mat. This will allow you to switch back and forth between mats, which will allow you to decrease the amount of beating each mat takes. Plus, having more than one match ensures that you can clean one properly and allow it to dry fully while using the other mat.

2) Always roll your mats and store them securely in place. This will help prevent spills and other accidents, and also protects the inner surface of the mats. You might want to invest in a mat bag for transporting your yoga masts to classes and for storing your mats between uses. Yoga mat bags come in all styles and sizes. Traditional ones allow you to place your mats into the bag at the top, while newer models have a side zipper for even more convenience. Some mat bags have enough room for wedges, clothes, belts, blocks, and other accessories as well as your mat.

3) Clean your yoga mats, before storing the mats. Use a very thin soapy water and thoroughly dry out your mat before rolling it and storing it again. If you use too much water accidentally, roll a towel inside the mat. This will help to draw out the excess water. Before rolling and storing the mats, remove the towel or you will get mildew on your mats.

4) Roll the match correctly. Roll the side you used to the outside of the roll. This will help ensure that the corners remain flat and don't get deformed.

5) Keep your mats in a cool, dry, and dark place. Excessive sunlight and direct sunlight will fade your mats’ colors. Similarly, too warm an atmosphere can cause some warping. Too cold an atmosphere can cause cracking on some mats, so do not store your mats in the garage if you live in a climate with four seasons. Avoid keeping your mats in any place where there is a lot of moisture. The last thing you want is mold and mildew on your mats.

Are Yoga Mats Really Necessary?

Some new yoga students assume that yoga mats are little more than fancy accessories. Some who are just starting to practice yoga even assume that yoga mats are not even necessary – that rolled up towels or carpets are just as good. Unfortunately, this myth can lead to injury. Yoga mats in fact provide important cushioning and grip that allows you to practice yoga safely and healthfully. Low-quality yoga mats can mean injuries and incorrect positions, which can lead to strains and aching muscles. Substituting carpets and towels can encourage you to slip and fall, which can be quite dangerous. Not having any cushioning can lead to bruising and pain. Obviously, a good quality mat is a must.

Luckily, a good quality yoga mat is not expensive. Many people choose sticky mats that are about 4mm thick because these mats are easy to roll up and wash while still providing lots of cushioning. Thinner mats are excellent if you do lots of standing poses and can be folded for kneeling poses, when you may need more cushioning and support.

While yoga mats are a must for any yoga practice, not all yoga mats are made equally well. Luckily, there are some ways to determine the quality of your mat:

1) Choose a tiny area of your mat (somewhere that is not visible) and gently rub the area with the edge of a coin to see how long it takes the surface to break down. It should take some time if you have a good quality mat.

2) Pinch a part of your mat and notice how long it takes for the material to spring back.

3) Moisten your hands and use your mat. Your mat should still not be slippery, even with your hands moist. Keep in mind that you may sweat during your yoga practice, so a mat that offers you some grip is important.

Keep in mind that new mats take some breaking in before they offer their best grip and support. When you get a new mat, therefore, you might want to walk over it in bare feet or wash it once or twice before taking it with you to yoga practice for the first time.

Keep in mind, too, that while quality is important, looks count as well. Look for a fun, custom yoga mat that will make you look forward to yoga practice. You will be spending a lot of time with your mat, so you may as well take the time to find one that suits you best.

Why Our Mats Offer You Green Yoga Practice

If you want to practice yoga, you likely want to be able to practice safely and without harming the environment or anyone else. After all, the aim of yoga is a better body, mind, and world, not combat. Unfortunately, while many yoga mats offer you cushioning and support, they are often made in ways that do not support the environment or other cultures. The Yogamatic mat is different.

The Yogamatic mat is a 72" x 24" (180cm x 60cm) and 1/4" (5mm) deep mat with a slip-resistant, zig-zag tread on the underside that keeps your mat firmly on the floor. The top of the Yogamatic mat is white and can be printed edge-to-edge with the art of your choice. The Yogamatic mat is designed to offer you high quality and fun custom designs that make you look forward to yoga practice.

While many yoga mats claim to be gentle on the environment, many are not. The Yogamatic mat, on the other hand, is completely made from TPE, which is completely biodegradable. Yogamatic mats can be easily disposed of without harming the environment or clogging landfills. We will even dispose of your Yogamatic mat safely for you. Just return your old Yogamatic mat to us via mail and we will offer you free shipping on a replacement mat.

Yogamatic mat is friendly for the environment, but also gentle on you. Our mats have a closed cell structure which provides the highest quality cushioning possible, so that you can enjoy perfect comfort and support during yoga practice. The cell structure also means that our mats are almost 50% lighter than yoga mats made from PVC. Yogamatic mats are uniquely designed so they cannot absorb moisture. This means that our mats will not store bacteria. This not only helps to keep you healthier, but also allows your mat to last longer.

There is another way that Yogamatic yoga mats are friendlier to our earth. Our mats are printed in the US – in Santa Monica, California, to be exact. The made-in-the-USA service is your assurance of quality. Our commitment to keeping the printing process local also ensures that the printing process adheres to all domestic environmental and labor laws, so that you know that your yoga mat was made responsibly. Plus, the inks we use in the printing process are water based and solvent-free, so that they are completely safe for you and do not produce any odors or release any toxic chemicals. When you choose our custom yoga mats, you can literally breathe easier.

Using Your Custom Yoga Mat

A custom yoga mat is not just for yoga. Any time you engage in a practice or exercise that requires some support, cushioning, and grip, a yoga mat is a great idea. People who practice yoga need yoga mats in order to give their bodies some support during practice, but people often find that their yoga mats are far more versatile than they imagined. Do you love Pilates? A good quality custom yoga mat can liven up your Pilates routine and can make many stretches and floor work easier and more comfortable. Do you love low impact exercise, including low impact aerobic exercise? A good yoga mat can provide you with some grip so that you don’t take a tumble and can provide you with some cushioning so that you don’t get nasty jolts as you work out.

However you use your custom yoga mats, make sure that you buy the right mat for you. Look for a mat that provides you with the thickness, comfort level, quality, and size you need for your intended use. It is a good idea to consider several types of mats before selecting one that makes you most comfortable.

Don’t overlook aesthetics, either. On a dreary morning, a custom yoga mat that makes you smile can be the boost you need to actually practice or work out. A custom yoga mat printed with a high quality design that you love will encourage you to stay active. A nice yoga mat is also a nice treat to yourself and a great way to express your mood and your sense of style.

Once you have found the right mat, consider buying at least two. It is more sanitary to have one yoga mat for home and one for the studio, and having more than one mat allows you to continue practice even when you have one mat in the wash. Having several custom yoga mats lets you switch up colors and patterns, as well, to match your mood. For some floor exercises, you might even want to stack several mats for added cushioning.

Once you have your mat or mats, make sure that you break them in by walking over them in your bare feet or by using them for gentle exercises before you try any more challenging practices. Once you mat is in use, make sure that you get into the habit of rolling your mat and storing it in a bag. Yogamatic yoga mats conveniently come with their own shoulder bags, which keep your mats free of dust and grime. If you have bought a printed mat, always roll it with the printed side out to preserve the design and discourages wrinkling. Clean your mat regularly using a soft cloth and warm water.
